A PARENT'S GUIDE TO
M A T H C H A L L E N G E
( Version 2.0 )
---------------------------------------------------------------
FAST START INSTRUCTIONS
-----------------------
If you're like many others, the LAST thing you want to do
after opening a new software package is read a lengthy
operations manual. Consequently, the following instructions
are intended to give you a whirlwind tour of MATH CHALLENGE:

IF YOU RECEIVED THIS PROGRAM ON A FLOPPY DISK
-- Insert Program Disk 1 into your floppy disk drive.
-- Type INSTALL A: C: and then hit <enter>
where A: is your floppy disk designation, and
C: is your hard disk.
Substitute other drive letters as appropriate.
-- Insert Disk 2 when instructed to do so and hit <ENTER>.
-- When the C:\CHLLNG> prompt appears,
type PARENT and then hit <ENTER>.
-- You will be asked a number of questions. Answer those
you're comfortable with. Leave the GOAL at 150.
Hit <ENTER> to use the default settings on others.
-- When you return to the C:\CHLLNG> prompt,
type CHILD and then hit <ENTER>

IF YOU RECEIVED THIS PROGRAM AS AN ARCHIVED FILE
-- If your program is archived (i.e., MATHCH12.ZIP),
there is no need to use an INSTALL program.
-- Instead, just un-archive the files into a subdirectory
called C:\CHLLNG. Then follow the above instructions
beginning with typing PARENT and hitting <ENTER>.

When time permits, come back and read these instructions
to learn about all the capabilities of your program.

MATH CHALLENGE
--------------
Copyright 1991, 1992, 1993 Just For Me Software, Inc.
OVERVIEW OF THE GAME
--------------------
o Math Challenge is a game designed to assist children in
learning their math tables. It provides a color, fun-
filled environment that encourages youngsters to learn.
o The rate of progress is individualized to match the pace of
each student. In advance of student usage, a parent or
teacher decides:
-- what subject to test (e.g., addition, subtraction, etc.)
-- how many problems to include in test
-- what part of the math tables to include
o The feedback given to that child is personalized by
referencing the child's name in the text and with a
photograph of the youngster in the graphics (upon
registration).
o For added motivation, parents insert a code number that can
be tied to some sort of reward. For example, we would allow
our children to stay up and read another 15 minutes every
night if they reached the code number.
ADDITIONAL FEATURES OF THE GAME INCLUDE:
---------------------------------------
o Enticing VGA graphics with true photographic quality,
colorful animation, and interesting sound effects
o Regular periodic encouragement for correct answers
o Recall/retesting of all problems missed
o Cute "storyboard" text personalized for your child (first
and last name)
o Full mouse support -- i.e., children can progress through
entire program solely using the mouse
o Rapid advancing through screens possible by using <ENTER>
key or clicking the left mouse button
o Ability to toggle sound on and off with <F5> key
o Ability to "save progress" using <ESCAPE> key -- and
return to game later
o Ability to keep track of personalization data for up to 49
children within one directory.
- 1 - - 2 -
o Ability to turn off photograph and personalized text
sequences to enable timed math table testing.
o Registered copies of MATH CHALLENGE are provided with
color scans of your child using photographs you provide.
MATH CHALLENGE SOFTWARE CONTENTS
--------------------------------
o Your Math Challenge program is completely contained on the
two floppy disks disk provided. These disks include:
-- program software for child usage
-- software for parents to make selections with
-- photographs/words/action sequences.
We suggest that before you attempt to use your disks, you
make back-up copies of the two master Program Disks. Use a
DOS DISKCOPY command.
INSTALLING MATH CHALLENGE ON YOUR HARD DISK
-------------------------------------------
o To load Math Challenge onto your hard disk, the following
steps are recommended.
-- Turn on your computer and allow DOS to boot.
-- Insert Program Disk 1 in your floppy drive.
-- Following the DOS prompt, type the letter designation
of your floppy disk drive followed by ":". For
example, to get to the A drive, you would type in "A:".
-- Hit the <ENTER> key to initiate the move to the
designated floppy disk drive.
-- From the floppy drive containing Program Disk, type the
command "INSTALL A: C:" and hit <ENTER>, where:
A: is the floppy disk drive you're loading from, and
C: is the hard disk drive you want to load.
If your floppy disk is not designated "A:" or your hard
drive is not designated "C:", substitute other drive
letters in the same context as above.
-- When instructed, insert Program Disk 2 and hit <ENTER>.
-- No other action is required. The INSTALL program will
create a separate directory named C:\CHLLNG on your
hard disk and load the program onto it. Simply follow
the screen instructions.
- 3 -
USING THE "PARENT" PROGRAM
--------------------------
o Parents, before starting , you may wish to input your test
instructions by typing PARENT at the DOS prompt before your
child starts.
o After answering a few questions, you will be returned to the
DOS prompt. Essentially, these consist of:
-- Name (e.g., John Smith) -- Please be sure to enter both
a first and last name separated by a space.
-- Sex (Boy or Girl) -- This information is used to select
whether the title screen should show a picture of a boy
or girl.
-- Goal -- A number from 30 to 900 should be entered (200
is recommended). This determines what score you child
must reach before the code number is revealed.
-- Code Number -- Parents are asked to insert a code
number. Successful completion of the program reveals
the code number, which can then be used as
justification for some sort of reward.
-- Test Type -- Please enter the type of testing that you
would like your child to use -- e.g., addition,
subtraction, multiplication, etc.
-- High Number -- A number from 3 to 9 should be used.
This is used to limit the size of numbers used. For
example, when a child is first learning addition, by
selecting a 5, the parent can ensure that the sum will
not exceed 10 (i.e, 5 + 5).
o At any time after you leave the PARENT program, your
instructions will remain intact. They are changed only by
rerunning the PARENT program as described above.
o Yes, you can turn off the computer and have your child come
back the following day, the following week, etc. Your
instructions will still remain in the computer.
START THE PROGRAM WITH THE "CHILD" COMMAND
------------------------------------------
o Your child starts the program by entering CHILD at the DOS
prompt for the CHLLNG directory. i.e.,
C:\CHLLNG> CHILD <ENTER>
- 4 -
o This will automatically load the necessary picture,
personalized data, word set, and action sequence files
needed by the CHILD program to run properly.
o From then on, it is a simple matter to follow the
instructions. Whenever a math problem appears, be sure to
enter the right number and then hit <enter>.
o Numbers are entered using either of the following methods:
1.) Clicking the left mouse button while the arrow is over
a number square on the screen, or
2.) Hitting one of the number keys on the keyboard.
Be sure to either click on the enter square or hit the
<ENTER> key after the correct number is shown on the screen.
o If you accidentally enter the wrong number, the last digit
can be erased by:
1.) Clicking the left mouse button while the arrow is over
the BKSPC square on the screen, or
2.) Hitting the <BACKSPACE> key on the keyboard.
o To minimize the likelihood of input mistakes, all keys are
disabled while the CHILD program is running, with the
exception of <number> keys, <backspace>, and <escape>.
ACCOMMODATING MORE THAN ONE CHILD
---------------------------------
o MATH CHALLENGE has the ability to store personalized data
for up to 49 children. This feature allows parent to use
the same program for both younger and older children within
the family. This feature also enables teachers to
individualize the pace for each student within a classroom.
o Arguments must be entered in the following format (be
sure to spell out the number):
PARENT 1 -- works with -- CHILD 1
PARENT 12 -- works with -- CHILD 12
PARENT 49 -- works with -- CHILD 49
PARENT 52 -- doesn't work --
o Remember that changing instructions with PARENT 2 will not
affect any other set of personalization data other than for
CHILD 2. Therefore, if you have five children, to
personalize your instructions for each, you would have to
run the PARENT program five times, each with a different
argument. - 5 -
o If no arguments are used, the computer will automatically
assume you are referring to either PARENT 1 or CHILD 1,
as appropriate.
o If possible, you might want to consider adding the
CHILD program to a standardized menu you may be using. That
way the child does not need to remember the base command or
appropriate argument.
o As simple as that! There is no need for your child to even
be aware that there is a PARENT program in the CHLLNG
directory.
